What is the best way to ask (in a letter) my employer to support me in further training in accounting?

Well, 2 possibles ways to look at this issue and which one you take is dependent on your answer to a question. What do you currently do for the company?
If your job is already in the accounting area, then it shouldn’t be a problem. Check the conpanies policies on training and education before you go forward, to make sure you hvae your facts straight. If the company does not have any particular policies on it, then have a face to face discussion with your manager to determine what you can do to have the company assist you with this training. If you’re looking at wanting to go back to college for it, then there should be a claus which says they will pay for it if you maintain a certain average grade. If it is only for individual accounting classes in particular areas that would probably be easier to get some agreement on. Don’t push to hard for too mauch at first.
Explain what the benefit to the company would be, if you were to go to the course. And make sure to point out that your taking the course will not adversely affect your performance during that time.
